Last week, we featured the Tertiary Boys Floorball Champions and this week we are privilege to have the opportunity to interview NUS Ladies Floorball Captain – Tan Yibing Alison (extreme left) about her team’s tremendous achievement for both SUNIG 2014 and Inter Varsity Polytechnic 2015 tournament, as they clinched both championships.

Alison is 23 years old, and have been playing Floorball for 6 years. She is currently playing for NUS Jupitans in Singapore Local league. Alison has been representing NUS Floorball for 4 years as center and occasionally as forward.

Getting to know the NUS Ladies Floorball team:

Q: How was the preparation prior to SUNIG and IVP?

Every year, we will plan an overseas trip to provide an opportunity for the NUS players to learn from the Swedish or Finnish players. In addition, prior to the start of SUNIG, we will train hard and send a team to compete in the league. This is so as to gather more game experience and improve on the chemistry between players.

Q: What was your team’s goal for both tournaments?

To win gold for SUNIG and IVP

Q: Tell us more about your team.

My team is made up of very committed and self-disciplined players. Through various activities, the team has gotten closer. I believe that team bonding is important, as the hunger to win does not only come from oneself, but from the will to fight for your teammates.

Q: Share with us 1 of the greatest moment in SUNIG & IVP, and why that moment.

We have been losing to our arch rivals, NTU for the past three years in both SUNIG & IVP. During SUNIG, we were quite apprehensive as to whether we were able to get past the mental barrier. This was reflective of our performance in the first period as the game remains in a draw at the end of first period.

When we eventually emerged victorious, it was a very significant moment for the NUS team.

Q: What do you think about winning the championship?

This is the first time that NUS Floorball has clinched the championship in IVP, since the inception of IVP Floorball 13 years ago. To be able to create that bit of history made the win more meaningful and this definitely motivates the younger players to train even harder to defend the championship title.

Q: Use 1 word that best describe your team.

Disciplined.

Q: What was the key element that helps the team to winning the championship?

The hunger to win.

Q: How do you see NUS Ladies Floorball in near future?

They will do their part for the NUS team as committed individuals and hopefully, attain deserving results.

Q: How do you or your coach motivates the team?

Our coach, Ruyi always instills self-confidence in the team. She often reminds us to play our own game and not be affected by any externalities. Furthermore, it is obvious that she believes in the team’s capabilities that help to bolster our self-confidence.

Q: What kind of challengers the team encounter during season?

For IVP, we have a shorter time period of about a month to prepare for the competition. Furthermore, it was the holiday period in the month of December. Hence, we have to work with the constraints of time to bring out the best in the team.
